The Rise of Vintage Perfume

The Rise of Vintage Perfume

Posted by MAIR on May 20th 2025

At a recent fragrance mixer event, I found myself in conversation with a vintage perfume blogger, which up until that point was something I didn't know was of interest or had a community of lovers around it. The more we spoke, the more I realized just how fast this niche is growing. Vintage perfume collecting is no longer just for archivists or hardcore enthusiasts. It’s becoming a mainstream curiosity, with perfume lovers increasingly turning to the past to find scent profiles that feel richer, more daring, and often more long-lasting than today’s modern offerings.

So what’s the appeal? Vintage perfumes often reflect an era when perfumery was bolder, less commercialized, and not dictated by TikTok trends. These scents tend to have deeper bases, more complex structures, and ingredients that are sometimes no longer used due to regulation or cost. In contrast, many modern perfumes are designed to be universally liked and easy to wear—which can also make them feel forgettable.

Vintage scents also offer an emotional pull. They connect us to moments, eras, and icons. Wearing a vintage perfume is like stepping into the mood of another decade. And for collectors, there's something special about owning a bottle that can no longer be replicated.

If you're curious to explore, vintage fragrances can be found on platforms like eBay, Etsy, or fragrance forums such as Basenotes and Fragrantica. Some niche retailers even specialize in sourcing discontinued gems. But tread carefully: authenticity matters, and storage conditions can impact quality.

Whether you’re a casual explorer or a serious collector, vintage perfume offers a way to experience scent as it once was—emotional, daring, and timeless.
