The fragrance industry has long been rooted in tradition, with master perfumers crafting scents based on intuition, artistry, and years of expertise. The question remains: is AI transforming the way we buy fragrance, or is it simply another tool in an industry known for innovation?

AI-driven fragrance brands are reimagining the scent creation process. These brands offer AI-powered quizzes and scent profiles, allowing consumers to discover a signature scent without ever stepping into a store.

Osmo, an AI-powered fragrance house, takes a different approach by using machine learning to translate text, images, and inspirations into precise scent formulations. Similarly, OnScent uses real-time AI insights to craft scents tailored to a brand’s needs, providing a new way for businesses to create signature fragrances.

Even major fragrance houses are experimenting with AI. Scentmate by dsm-firmenich uses AI to analyze consumer preferences and market trends, enabling brands to design scents that resonate with their audiences.

Is AI Changing the Way We Buy Fragrance?

Not to sound old-fashioned, but there’s nothing that can replace the heart behind how perfume is made. While AI is undoubtedly offering new ways to experience perfume, the sensory experience of testing a scent in-store, feeling the texture of a beautifully designed bottle, and experiencing how a fragrance evolves on the skin is irreplaceable.

However, AI does bring some exciting possibilities to fragrance buying:

  • Convenience: Consumers can explore and order fragrances from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for in-store testing.

There is space for this new tech-driven approach to perfume, but I don’t think it replaces the entire process of how fragrance is made today. A disruptor? Perhaps. A complete upheaval? More than likely not. The artistry, craftsmanship, and deep emotional connection behind traditional perfumery can’t be replicated by an algorithm. AI may redefine certain aspects of how we explore and buy fragrance, but the soul of perfumery—the human touch—will always remain at its core.
